Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Would you play another gender if it was a role you truly loved? Could you pull i

Question:When I was in college - I was directing a production of "Whisper Into My Good Ear" - which is a two man show. One of the guys wouldn't learn his lines - and we were getting close to opening. I learned the lines - found a costume that worked - taped down my breasts - and had an awesome make-up artist friend do a beard on me with spirit gum. I showed up at the first rehearsal of hell week - and told him that I WOULD do the part if needed. If he'd get his crap together - fine - if not - I'd go on. He learned his lines - and was actually pretty good in the role. But I could have pulled it off.

sure, peter pan was always played by a woman...

Well, in the words of my dad, "it's the ultimate acting challenge." (he has this new respect for John Travolta now). I think that if I was truly passionate about the character, and willing to get past my pride and really, really challenge myself, then yes. If you'll notice, only the truly talented actors of Hollywood have taken on roles that focus on different genders. (John Travolta, Hilary Swank, Felicity Huffman, Wilson Jermaine Heredia)

Only If I Get To Wear A Strap On..............
I Really Want To Become The Character............

If I could play a fat Jamaican woman or a fat Mexican woman, that'd be the best.

When I was a young actress, I did this a lot simply because there were so few good female roles. It was not satisfying. I pulled it off, but it's just not the same as getting a really meaty female role.

Not exactly because I have a high voice and a well-endowed upper area but I whis I were a guy because they have so many good roles!

Sure- I love the character Velma Kelly in "Chicago"
