Position:Home>Theater & Acting> The Color Purple on Broadway...Someone that's seen it can you answer a few q

Question:I am looking for someone that has seen this play on Broadway. I am a huge fan of the novel and of the movie. As you may or may not know the book has a underlying lesbian theme. The movie downplays that part of Celiee's and Sug Avery's relationship...
I would like to know if the play on Broadway follows the book more or the movie more? This is important to me cause I would love to take my mom to see this play But she is very anti gay... I am gay and it's something we don't discus at all! So I would rather not bring her to a play that could spark an argument. She has seen (and enjoyed) the movie but the very subtle kiss between Celiee and Sug went right over her head. She has not read the book. I recently suggested we see a show and she has asked to see THE COLOR PURPLE specifically....So you can understand my worry.

I've seen the broadway performance, and its more to the book. More of Celiee's and Sug's relationship is explored. A kiss is shared, you see Celiee bathe Sug and disuss their romance here way more than in the movie. However, It was such a small portion that it would be a shame to miss such a great, unforgetable play.

I have seen it and it DOES have subtle signs of the lesbian relationship. None the less it was a pretty good show, im sure you would love it seen you loved the book and movie. But i say still take your mother its not much of lesbian affection but there is some in it. good luck.

The play TOTALLY follows the book....it's practically exact. But it does a show why the relationship began in the first place...Celilee was abused from the beginning...never shown or / known love...She did what felt right to her....Now that Sug was a mess!!! but alot of fun...it was very good.
