Question:I'm having a problem with my school play. We're doing Seussical Jr.I tried out for a lead in my school play and I ended up in the chorus. The kids who did get a lead aren't even serious about, and even worse we're doin a musical. I'm a black kid and our cast is practically all white, only two black kids got leads and no black kids got minors. I think that they picked the cast by personality and not by talent.I'm a very quiet person so I don't stand out much in school, but I sang in the talent show last year and the same teachers that picked the charcters for the play are the same one who were telling me i was a great singer. The broadway version sounds very soulful and that's wut kind of voice I have. But the school version is very boring and has no soul at all. The people who got the leads can't even sing at all. I didn't even get to be the Grinch and he only has one freakin line. I don't want to sound concieted but I think that I wanna quit b/c I don't wanna be in musical that sucks

im doing the same play and was one of two black kids who got leads. jsut do your best stand out as much as you can and look for as many opprotunities as possible to make yourself scene to the director. You can make the play more interesting go out of your comfort one when you improvise and become your character everyone in the play has a chracter just make yours stand out and be known. do what you need to do. if u really loved performing and acting then it doestn matter what you get because it will all pay off in the end. i was in the chorus last year for grease at my school and now i got picked for cat in the hat. whatever you do DO NOT quit. quitting will get you nowhere. and if the leads arent serious about it then they might quit and there will be a spot open for u possibly. you never know if youre being watched so always act like it and you will get far

hope i helped =]

Well, if it is no longer a fun, enjoyable experince for you, then you should quit. Don't waste your time doing something you don't like!

However, if really you're just jealous, than maybe you'll want to stick it out, who knows, showing commitment now, could mean a big role next time, and dropping out now would make you seem bitter and uncastable for the next audition.

For inspiration, listen to "Nothing" from A Chorus Line, it fits your situation perfectly!

Good luck, whatever you decide!

if you do not see this as a chance to learn about ALL aspects of the theater even the small parts, then quit.

there are no small parts only small actors

A musical...is still a play no matter how much songs or what type of songs it has. It also does not matter how good the actor/actress sings.

Umm, but anyway, sorry about that. The main thing that you should think about is this: What can you do to make your school play better? If you say you are shy, try asking your play director in order to switch roles with someone unwilling. You say you are shy inside, but that may not affect your acting skills. Even if you are ONLY in the chorus, you can still be a big part of the play. Sing to the best of your abilities, be the lead in the chorus! Do whatever it takes to make your play the best your school has ever seen!

Well, no. You should not quit, because when you accepted the role, you gave your word you would see it through. Your word is more important than the embarassment of being in bad show. But much of your complaint sounds like sour grapes. Maybe the directors will pull it off, maybe not. If they don't you will know not to audition for any of their shows again.

You shouldn't quit - you made a commitment and you should stand by it.
Does the director/teacher know how you feel about this situation? Maybe you should talk to them and voice your opinions about what you feel is working and what isn't. Just make sure you be polite and give constructive criticism more than anything. Just tell them what you said in the post and you should be fine. They really need to know how you feel. Tell them you're not having fun.
Whatever you do, just don't quit. They'll never cast you for anything ever again. Especially in school plays, commitment is crucial.

If you came across as shy or quiet at the audition, the director may feel that you are not ready for a lead. You have to stand out at auditions to get big parts. Quiet people who sing well end up in the chorus. That's just the way it is. The next time you audition for something remember to sell yourself through the song. You have to show the director that you can do it the very first time they see you. If you just stood there and sang nicely, but had no personallity, that's why you're in the chorus. Ever watch American Idol? Some decent singers get passed over because they have no personallity when they auditioned.
