Martha is in the Mission Band. She may have one or two lines of dialogue in the script, but I'm not 100% sure about that. What she gets to do is sing in four-part harmony the "Follow the Fold" song. It's possible your director picked you for this role because s/he knows that you have the ability to carry a harmony part, and not everyone has that skill.
The mission band people are on stage in a number of scenes, and they get to walk through the action at key moments. Plus, they get to be in the "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat" number, which is tremendous fun.

A small role is what you make of it, so I hope you will have fun making Martha a specific human being with her own history, relationships and goals on stage. (Just make sure what you are doing isn't drawing focus unnecessarily.) But have fun with the part and work as hard as you can and in another year, you might be up for a lead!

It is a very important part. The smaller the role, the more important it is, because it is hard to find someone without an ego to play it while anyone will play the leads. There are no small parts, only small actors.

Martha's role in "Guys and Dolls," was to get other people to do her homework for her so she didn't have to write her own thesis.
