well, it depends on what version of the script you are looking at to determine who wrote the stage directions. If it is Priestley's orginial MS, then they are there because he thought they were necessary for the proper understanding of the scene. But if you are looking at an acting edition, or a published copy of the stagemanager's copy of a professional production, the stage directions may not be Priestly's at all, but those that the stage manager wrote in during the blocking and rehearsing of the show.
