Position:Home>Theater & Acting> John Robert Powers - Opinions please!?

Question:Alright, this is a bit of an ethical question, I guess...

I know that JRP overcharges their students and lead young inexperienced actors into believing that they need to take their classes. They have a bad reputation.

However, I just saw an ad looking to hire acting teachers. I would be a very good candidate for this job and the pay (quite good) is very tempting, I must admit. I do need the money and I prefer to take jobs that are related to the acting field (as opposed to waitressing.)

Do you think applying for this job would make me evil? Or should an actor go with a job that will pay the rent and put food on the table?

I feel I could offer the students real training and direction... and at least give them something worthwhile for the crazy amount of money they would have spent on the class.

Yet, I'm torn, because I know JRP is not that reputable.

I know that as actors it's great when we can find a job that is related to our field. I'd be a bit torn over this as well, but after thinking a lot about it, I think it would be fine for you to take the job - since, as you say, you could actually give the students some valuable information. I think then, what YOU would be doing is legit.

However, if they ask you to recruit students or to lie to them, then I think that the money wouldn't be worth it. You wouldn't want to put yourself in a position where you're asked to do something against your conscience.

As it is, even if you took the job for the money and to help the students, I probably wouldn't list it on your resume, because as you know JRP doesn't have a good reputation, because of how they prey on inexperienced actors who dream of becoming famous. I wouldn't want the reputation of that company to tarnish your reputation.

Does that make sense?

So, in short, yes, I think it's fine to take the job as long as they don't ask you to do something underhanded, but I wouldn't brag that you work there - lol.

TOTAL RIP OFF!!!! don't do it.
