Position:Home>Theater & Acting> No Exit or Angels in America?

Question:I am an actor and I have recently been asked to play the role of Garcin in the play No Exit. At the same time, however, there are local auditions for Angels in America, a show that I would also really like to do. Both shows are great, but because of their rehearsal schedules, I can only choose one to do. Which production do you think I should decide to do?

From a working actor's standpoint, I would have to say take the job in which you have been offered a role. From the artistic standpoint, ANGELS IN AMERICA is a beautiful play with a strong message. In NO EXIT Garcin is a meaty character with lots of nuance and greater range of emotion, depending on the director's vision for this production. I would still tend to see where the audition goes for AIA, especially if this is not a paying job. If it does pay, then go for the role you already have and hope that you get another chance at AIA in the future. Trust me, both plays will continue to be produced because they both have a lot to say. I'd be interested to know which role in AIA you would like to play, too. I don't envy you having to make this decision, but I wish the best in making it. Break a leg! Rob R

If you've already been offered a role, take it.

Angels in America is the best choice.Well written with a message that is contempory . No Exit by Satre is an exercise and has limited audience appeal.

No Exit is very interesting. If you think you are capable of handling the role then take it.
