Alto audition Song? (maybe a bit higher too)?

Question:Hi, i'm Kelsey. I'm 16 and I'm auditioning for my theatre school's production of High School Musical (though i'm not a big fan). I'm auditioning specifically for the part of Kelsi which is not a big singing part, but for the audition we need to sing a song. I'm more of a pianist than a singer, but I need some advice for finding a good alto piece for this audition, nothing too hard or crazy. Thanks.

I love Les Mis and Phantom but if you are an alto I don't recommend any of the songs listed above, What does Kelsi exude? What is her perosnality like? Try to find a song that matches kelsi's personality, let the audition work for you and reinforce your inner Kelsi, if she's outgoing try Maureen's part of take Me as I am from Rent, if she's shy try The Boy Next door from meet me in St Louis, if she's kind of goofy try something from Thoroughly Modern Millie, if she's a smart alec try Sandra Dee from Grease if shes Girlie do I enjoy Being a girl from Flower Drum Song, if she's kind of a tomboy try you can't get a man with a gun from Annie Get your Gun... (you see where I am going with this right?) All these are mezzo songs but altos have no problems with most of these songs. None of these songs have crazy notes and all are good choices for an audition, pick what you like the best.

There are so many choices for an alto. If you are not that strong of a singer, use a song that can use dramatic expression. On my Own from Les Mis is good, and emotion can be added to create an amazing audition. There are a few good songs from Jekyll and Hyde that can be alto, including Someone like You and Once upon a Dream. You could also use one voice line from Phantom of the Opera's Angel of Music, which isnt too high. Good luck.
