Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Anyone know about interlochen?

Question:I'm thinking of auditioning with a friend this summer for either the Vocal Arts Program or the Musical Theatre Workshop...anyone have any recommendations? It sounds like it could be fun but do you know if you always have to wear your uniform, the classes are boring, and if overall it's worth the money? Thanks

As a returning camper, I can tell you that Interlochen will definitely be an amazing experience.

You have to wear your uniform on Main Camp (i.e., wherever there's a chance a member of the public might see you), to meals, to performances (excepting musical theatre, of course), and to classes. You DO NOT have to wear it lounging around the cabin, at the beach, or at the high school dances.

If you go to Interlochen because you love to sing/dance/act, you will love your classes. If not...well, I've never encountered an Interlochenite who doesn't. You will spend most of your time practicing, but there are plenty of social opportunities as well. I've been to both the Advanced Vocal recitals and Musical Theatre Workshop performance, and they were both outstanding; everyone is very talented (and equally hardworking).

My only word of caution would be to stress that the programs you mentioned are especially competitive, even for Interlochen, since they are some of the most popular. Advanced Vocal takes something like 14 vocalists (PER summer!). MTW is a little less intense than Musical Theatre Production, but several girls in my cabin were in it and they were all awesome.

Good luck, and hope to see you there this summer.

I don't know a lot of details but a close (extremely talented) friend of mine went for several years and she absolutely loved it, said she had some of the best experiences of her life there.

Its a highly regarded arts school. If you are serious about performing arts, then its probably definitely worth the investment for your resume and general experience. If you are considering it for fun, or just to kill time over the summer, you may want to consider how much that's worth to you financially. I don't know anything about their uniform policy, although I'm sure you could find information on their website or through a contact there fairly easily. As far as whether the classes are boring or not... again, will probably depend on the seriousness of your interest. Its not like summer camp when you're a kid, but if you have a genuine interest in the arts I'm sure even the technical aspects of the classes (assuming there may be some) will hold some interest for you. :) Good luck!
