You really cannot develop your skills in private. In order to become a better actor you have to act. You have to be in lots and lots of plays. Only acting teaches you how to act, not classes, not books, not exercises. When you know and understand what acting is and what one does when one acts effectively, you will be able to cry on cue, which is to say when stimulated by the scene to cry. If you are blessed with a gift for acting and you are in character, which is to say concentrating on your performance of the scene, when you receive the stimulus to cry you will cry. You do not need any agony-creating Stanislavski emotional memory exercises or any Method crap. You just need to react to the stimuli of the scene. That is what effective acting is today. Performances that make the audience go Wow! are carefully staged, directed and well acted. They can occur in almost any play if it is well directed.

Well, you can get classes.

You can go to the book store and find good acting books.

And you can watch movies, and analyze how the actors developed their character, every little movement they made (and I mean in a good movie, like one that won awards)....
