i am in the same boat as you, so im going to give you the same advice and hard-truths i gave myself.

1.you NEED to purchase a video camera as soon as you can. a cheap one will sufice, but the nicer the better.

2. i would suggest NOT involving your friends, because its hard to be serious if your just goofing off the whole time...trust me, its not worth it.

3. sony usually has good starter quality for an amatuer, and there usually kinda cheap. i got mine for a little over a hundred.

4. you should get a tripod with adjustable legs/neck. keeps the camera still, and one with wheels is a plus.

5. yes, it is hard to become a famous director, everything is hard to become famous at. you have to have vision, originality, and of course, talent. you have to be VERY dedicated to your practice, and remember, you WILL have failures, everyone does. its how you get over these that will prove whether or not you will succeed. good luck!

i don't know

Of course its hard to become a famous director...its hard to become a famous anything, you have competition, and part of it is knowing the right people and just plain luck.
If I were you I'd start with a course....look up something at a local community college.

Well first off, you'll need to be reborn as Jew.

Well besides going to school, you could be a real armature and get yourself some "groupies" and write them a script and video tape it and stand in front of Blockbuster or some joint that sells/rents videos and give them one of your Directed movies and see where it goes from there.

You should involve friends... for sure. Also, look on the boards at local colleges for flyers about film projects and people who write screen plays. You will find a TON of people to collaborate with...writers...actors....

Try not to focus so much on "being famous" and more so on your craft. If you just stay in today, take it a step at a time and hone in on the art of it, you will end up where your supposed to.

Interesting fact:

Quentin Tarantino worked at a Video store before releasing Pulp Fiction. It takes dedication and time.

Get yourself a cheapo video camera and start making short movies with your friends. You could post them online and maybe when you start to get better at it, people will start to notice. You might become a little celebrity at your school. Ask some relatives if they have any old camcorders that are just collecting dust. Camcorders have changed so much in the past ten years that a lot of people have at least one old-fashioned one that they don't use anymore.

I was reading a book by that famous director Robert Rodriguez, and he talks about how he started making short films using his brothers and sisters as actors when he was a kid. He learned a lot of things just by doing that. Check out the book. It's called "Rebel without a Crew."

Ask that question at film schools like AFI, or UCLA. They want to answer your questions and can give you direction and support.
