Yes, Macbeth does indeed hire murderers who in turn kill banquo.
In the play they are listed simply as 'Murderer 1' etc. However there are three of them and there is always speculation that the third murderer is another one of the characters sent by Macbeth to make sure the job is done right.

However in most shows it is just 3 actors labeled 'the murderers' who are hired by Macbeth. They manage to kill Banquo but his son Fleance escapes.
