Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I'm rewriting "Our Town" in the style of the fifties for an assign

Question:For our final project in English, we were assigned to rewrite and perform the third act of "Our Town", the play, as though it were set in the fifties. I'm in a group of eight people, and I've been assigned the playwriting, because I'm the only one who has ever written a play before, and has experience with the style and such. However, I'm not sure how the Stage Manager should speak.
For those of you who don't know, the Stage Manager is like a narrator.
Here's our plot, in short:
The Stage Manager, who is Barbie (this was not my desision), tells about the graveyard, and a crowd gathers for the funeral of Emily. Then, Emily goes back in time about ten years, to her High School, on her sixteenth birthday.
Instead of involving the parents, as we weren't sure how to keep it simple, we've changed the characters to her friends at school. Emily realizes she's in love with George, and they sing(well... lip sync... neither of our characters can sing) "Summer Lovin' " from Grease.

I would not use "Summer Lovin" from Grease. You need to actually use a love song from the 50's time period don't cross over music from another show. Instead of having them sing why don't you have them dance to this song...a nice slow dance...the music could be coming from the radio or a radio in a car.

You need to do some research of the time period in order to write about it. If Emily goes back ten years then what is the present time and how far back is the ten years. If it takes place directly in the 50's then that means she was in high school in the 40's. So you will have to research that time period as well.

As the playwright you have to give sublte hints within the script as to who the character is. Even though it is just the narrator. If you are setting this in the 50's then I suggest watching movies or even TV shows of this time period to get a better feel for how the narrator should speak. Again it is more research, but as a writer you can only write what you know. So put on your detective hat and start searching!

Good Luck with the project.
