Mostly, they teach you how to let down your defenses and take emotional risks in front of other people. MOST people can act and act well, but they let their fear of criticism or rejection stop them from really being free with their acting.

They teach you various exercises in how you can stop being worried and afraid of what others think, and just have fun playing other roles and enjoying a game of "let's pretend," which is what acting really is.

My high school drama teacher used to tell us before every play, "Why do they call it a play? Because you get to play. Have fun." Acting is a ton of fun, but only if you learn to let your guard down and lose your feeling of awkwardness. :)

Every acting teacher teaches something different. You are there to learn the basics of acting. Then you practice the exercises they give you. You learn what you skills are and what your talents are.

It depends on the format.

You learn stage positions, stage moves. There are moves, for example, when a third person joins two people in the background.

You work on monologs, scenes, etc.

You learn how to make entrances and exits.

You learn where to look.

Some classes deal in improvization.

In the last acting class I took, we worked on stage presence and being aware of our bodies and how we were standing and such to convey emotions. Also, we did a lot of improv work, so we could learn to think quickly and let our guard down. Towards the end, we all wrote our own little scenes based on scenarios our teacher gave us.
