Hi Miss Questions-

How exciting that you are getting out there and auditioning! I am very excited for you. The gentleman above gave you some good advice. There are also a few things you want to keep in mind when doing cold readings.

First of all make sure you hold the script steady. There is nothing more distracting then a wiggling script and nerves can get the best of us during auditions.

Make sure you don't bury your face in the script. Hold it out far enough and down enough so the director can still see your face.

Also make sure you are not just looking straight down at the paper the entire time. Your eyes are such an important tool in acting. It is best to read the line and then look up to deliver it. You can follow along with your index finger to keep your place.

Make sure you get there early and ask if there is a script you can look at. Then take your time looking it over and making strong character choices. If they are giving out copies of what you will be reading and you can keep it then it is also a great idea to mark the paper with your beats and motivations.

Regarding projection take notice of what size the room is. If your are in a big room with not much furniture in it know that your voice will get lost a bit and you will need to really increase your volume to be heard. Speak from your diaphragm and don't forget to breathe. If the room is smaller you will not need to project as much but make sure your pace is slow enough and your diction is very clear.

A good rule of thumb on accents is if you don't know how to do them skip it. Unless they specifically ask you to try a particular accent you will look far better speaking in your normal voice. Nothing is worse then someone butchering an accent. Your acting skills will be lost to the distraction of the accent.

And regarding pitch if you get clear on your character choices that should help in your vocal choices.

You might want to check in advance to find out if you will have to sing and dance. If you need to be ready to dance you want to make sure you are dressed appropriately and have shoes you can move well in and if you must sing find out if you need to have a song prepared.

BREAK A LEG and HAVE FUN! And be sure to keep me posted on how it goes!

First, relax. You're there to have a good time.

Take a little time to look over the reading. Really, take your time. Don't rush. When looking over the part, "hear" the words being spoken in your head by your own voice. Read slowly, and "hear" the words slowly. When you are comfortable with your inflections and pauses, read the part.

By all means, do not read too fast. Take your time, and read the part like you imagined it.

If you are comfortable with accents, and the part calls for it, then go ahead.

Physically speaking, let your shoulders relax, and make sure your feet are spaced about as far apart as your hips, maybe a little more. Don't lock your knees. Be comfortable, and take a deep breath through your nose, and out through your mouth in a "whoooooo" shape. Keep your shoulders relaxed as you do this.

Then, read loudly, clearly, and slowly. Remember, you're there to have a good time, and being as it's local theatre, you're among friends.

Relax! and break a leg.

first of all nerves are normal you jsut have to learn to channel your nerves into emotion and read like that
cold reading aren't as hard as they sound... all you have to do it keep your confidence high and don't look nervous. if they give you time to look over the script... do it. the more familiar you are even if it's only one or two times through it the better you will do.
second to project your voice talk loudly but don't scream unless that's teh emotion you need to show
if you need to sing and dance jsut go with the flow it's better to have it look natural then to have it look liek your a robot.
