I personally memorize everything I can about the part well beforehand, along with any necessary research (no matter how small the part). If that person has a job in the character description I immediately look up terminology about that job in case I have to improvise. I can't speak highly enough about being able to improvise. I've studied with the Acme Comedy Theater with a lot of people from television and other improv theaters and everyone said that it gives you the ability to know that no matter how scared you get, you will always be ready with what to say.

As a theater director, I appreciate it when people know what they're auditioning for. I never have time to explain it to anyone so if someone comes in without a full understanding of the part they're auditioning for (and haven't called ahead of time to ask questions), then their resume goes straight to the trash.

The other important thing is that casting directors are looking for people who seem like they would be great to work with and not just who would be great for the part. They don't care how good you are if you're a complete jerk. They like it when you're generally happy and look like you really want to be there.

Good luck.

lol.
just dont be nervous, i dunno if its me but im too dumb to get nervous bout that kind of thing lol.

just believe in yourself..try to stand out a little..really put your all into it. you can do a million auditions but when you do put your all into it. part of the word acting is all about showing people who you are and who you can be(and lots more but in your question this is the part im talking about). if it's yourself or acting like someone your not even like just don't be scared and show them you can be anyone because thats kinda what acting is. actors/actresses take on roles that are not even anything like themselves..they just go out and give their all...so dont be nervous and just do what you have to do. just go in and know what and who you have to be and just do it. freak out after..not during or before ..

To stand out make sure you seem loose, happy, enthusiastic and exited to be there. Dress well and appropriately. Do not fidget, plead or seem desperate to get the role. Study for a broad range of characters not just the one you want so that you seem willing and flexible. Make sure you speak clearly and annunciate. In all instances whether it is a vocal audition, a small monologue, scripting back and forth, or even improve make sure you pick a piece that is not common and overused. You will be nervous, it’s normal, but if you have fun and view the situation as if you have nothing to gain or lose you may have a better chance of bagging the role! Break a leg!

You need to know your piece backwards and forwards! A monologue which is slightly uncommon but not unheard of is good, so no Shakespeare. You need to have rehearsed so many times with an instructor or school drama teacher in order to get the best out of it. Go to the audition in comfortable theatre blacks, do vocal warmups while you wait and stretch! Email me for some great warmups I learned while at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) which teach you to open your mouth and speak more clearly and pronounce and annunciate words better. You need to sell yourself, smile and above all act on the adrenaline rushing through your veins, that way they can't ignore you!
Break a leg!

Animaux, just keep telling yourself you are the best.
