Film Auditions in the Paper?

Question:i was just curious about how people such as Rachel hurd-Wood and Katey Leung get roles in big budget movies such as "Peter Pan(2003) and Harry Potter: Goblet of fire". They are unknown, and never really had any acting experience, and no background in it too. I was reading around and their biographies indicated that they just heard about these types of auditons through advertisements. I live in sanf rancisco, cailfornia. I was just wondering if any of you out there might be able to give me sources where i could go find these type of "drop in auditions". i know you will be competing against hundreds and maybe thousands of other ppl, but i am very curious. i honestly live in a pretty big city and i have never seen anything like this advertised in the paper, radio, or TV. how do you hear about things like this. i believe these two starlets did not have agents either when they started.
