basically by telling him the truth about his future, he was driven to fulfill his future. like he wouldn't have done any of that is it hadn't been for what the witches told him.
His downfall was due mainly to his own consciousness and how seriously he took what the witches predicted. I would say it is somewhat a combination but mainly just himself driving himself crazy.
