I've heard it was set in the 1200 - 1300 by a lot of professionals.
But it WAS written in the 1500's so it's possible.

It can be set whenever you like. I have seen it performed in a 21st century setting and it was brilliant. All of Shakespeare's plays are timeless so don't worry about when it originated. Perform it with truth in whatever age you want. The Montague's and Capulets were portrayed as different gang families. Great way to do it.
