Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Drama Question?Question:What is artistic Discipline? Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: What is artistic Discipline? Knowing your lines inside out. Staying in character and interacting brilliantly with others in your roles. Knowing what depths to pull on to evoke emotion and being able to do this consistently no matter what's going on around you or in your life at the time. Giving yourself 100% to your character. Working harder than you've ever worked, showing up ahead of time, never complaining and bringing it, even to rehearsal each time. Giving other actors their due, encouraging them in their roles. Listening closely to the director even though you may disagree. Helping others who may be having trouble in their roles. In a nutshell, professionalism on every level. If you're doing it right, it will take quite a while to ease out of the character you've 'adopted' and get back to yourself. l AbFab is correct. If you want to sum it up more succinctly: it's doing all of the things you are told to do but eventually decide you're good enough that you don't have to do them. The difference between a professional and an amateur who would like to be a professional is that the pro still does all of the things that AbFab mentions and doesn't cut corners. Some people like to think that "art" and "discipline" are contradictory, but they aren't. If this question were in the sculpting section, it would mean, set up the block correctly, do the preliminary drawings, choose the right tool for the job, HAVE the right tools for the job with you, work in the correct light, etc. The emphasis on improv recently has led people to believe that some of the discipline is not necessary in acting. They're wrong. |
