Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I need a "blow the audience away" monologue?

Question:Ok so I have an audition for a scholarship and a part in a traveling acting group at my future college.....The scholarships could total over 6000 a yr.

I need like two amazing monologues...one must be dramatic/serious the other comical....and each monologue needs to be about a minute each...

I don't mean to sound like an ***....but I am a pretty good actor, been in a number of community shows and I have been nominated for local awards...so I can handle about anything and do it justice

So thanks.

Suggested Shakespeare:
Rousing speach to troops from Henry V

Suggested Comedy excerpt from:
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
or
You're A Good Man Charlie Brown

For your serious one, how about the famous speech from Braveheart? You can put alot of energy and passion into it.

For your comical one, how about doing a bit from Rainman?

try shakesphear for your serious that will show off the amazing talent of acrtin and also my advise do not take a monologue from a musical or a hit show trust me it might not be a good choice!

I probably don't need to tell you that some of these suggestions are, uh, lacking. For God's sake, don't do famous monologues from movies unless they were well known plays first (like Cockoo's Nest or something).

Shakespeare isn't a bad choice but if you go that route I'd find something more contemporary. Also, the burden of Shakes is that they've seen it ten million times and have expectations. Although short of Romeo, you won't lose any points for lack of originality, however since Shakes is always respected.

I will tell you one monologue thats crazy, wacky, out there and it may not be for you buuuuuuttt, were you to do something heavy like Shakes for your dramatic, this one would certainly be the opposite. I used to do it for big room auditions (like hundreds of people) and intimate ones alike and it was always effective.

The crazy, loopy cowboy from Eric Bogosian's Men Inside.

I started with "WOOOWEEE, Boy you shoulda been there!" and ended with "We know how to have a good time!!!" and cut it at under minute. It's non-stop energy and it breaks all the rules, but I swear i never failed me, including getting me into exclusive classes, shows and even a film (or at least getting me in the door).

the BEST ever (serious) is Night Mother
It's about a girl that is so upset in her life and she tells her mother she wants to kill herself. It's more a due interp thing but you can do it by yourself just use your differnet voices and look at different places on the wall. i've done it before and won awards for it. it truely is something that will leave a tear in everyones eyes
