Question:Next week, I am going to try out for a female role in our school play, "Harvey", written by Mary Chase. It is the story where a man has an imaginary friend that is a six foot rabbit named Harvey. (James Stewart was in the movie). I just need to know which part I should shoot for. I need to know each of the female characters general personalities and description. If you could do this, I would greatly appreciate it :) If you could maybe suggest what character I should try out for, they would be greatly appreciated. I am a 5'3" petite thin fairly attractive brunette (with hair lenth to mid-back) and blue eyes and I'm 16; I'm usually in some sort of comical role, but I can play dramatic roles well also. Before next week would be ideal! Posted 1/8/08 :D Thanks!

The main female role in 'Harvey' is that of Veta — sister of Elwood P. Dowd — played brilliantly on screen by Josephine Hull (who was equally great in 'Arsenic and Old Lace'). As this role should be played by an older actress (Veta's a widow, and the mother of a spinster daughter), you should try for the role of Myrtle Mae Simmons, who is Elwood's niece (Veta's daughter). This is a very funny and memorable role, as one of the caretakers at the 'funny farm' (where Veta wants to send Elwood) takes a fancy to Myrtle Mae. The role of the caretaker (Wilson) was played in a note-perfect fashion by the amazing Jesse White. Myrtle Mae's frustrated a lot by having an uncle whom she thinks is crazy, but her moments with Wilson are hilarious.

Elwood is best friends with Harvey, a pooka, which is a spirit that takes animal form. In Harvey's case, he was a rabbit, 6' 3 1/2' tall. The wonderful thing about the story is that — in truth — 'crazy' Uncle Elwood isn't the only person to see Harvey: Veta does; the head of the funny farm does . . . Elwood isn't alone.

Best of luck!
