Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Similarities in Sondheim's characters: Johanna and Rapunzel?

Question:I have played both Johanna and Rapunzel and I have found wild similarities between the two characters:
1. Both are kept locked away by over-protective parent figures.
2. Both are in love with a forbidden love type against their parent figure's will.
3. Their hair is a big part of their character (Johanna: yellow hair and Fogg's asylum, Rapunzel: duh...)
4. They are both ingenue characters (virginal, innocent, typically soprano characters - their naivete is typically their downfall).
So do you think this is a coincidence?

Aw, I played the Witch in Into the Woods!
hm, good going, I never noticed that!

I think Sondheim did it for a specific reason, not a coincidence.

I just watched my Into the Woods DVD the other day and thought that something was familiar....it could be a coincidence...or he used the same themes. Either way, it's very interesting!
