It all depends on what you're using the picture for. The background and clothes you wear reflect what you're going to do with your photo. When I decided I didn't want to pay the high prices for my daughter's senior pictures, I took 3 rolls of 35mm film, my camera, several changes of clothes, and we headed out in the country. I used several backgrounds, like her standing on a hillside, on rocks, on a bridge, in a park, etc. She tried different poses, with different background behind her, and changed clothes in the car (under a blanket). The best shot for her yearbook was one that was taken in our own backyard. I hung a white blanket over our clothesline, had my daughter sit on a stool, then took the shot. The picture turned out better than I expected. The late afternoon sun shown through the blanket, giving it a color that looked almost like it was shot in a studio. I had someone make copies on their computer, with photo paper, and they turned out as well as if I had taken them to a developer. As any photographer knows, you have to take a lot of pictures to find even one really good one, so it's best to just start practicing. Hopefully, you have a digital camera, so that you won't waste a lot of film, like I did. Make sure of your lighting too, even with outside shots. A few of the ones I did in the woods didn't turn out too good, because it was kind of dark, so it didn't show much detail. Try to always have the sun at your back when shooting, so that you don't get any glare in your lens. Have fun practicing. <*)))><

u have to just sit there and get hit but you cant go nowheres so you have to take it like abitch..

get a rifle

Point a gun at a head and fire. You might not want to wear nice clothes though, it can be quite messy.

On a serious note, as far as headshots go, all that really matters is your hair, face, and possibly the upper 20% of your shirt. You should be able to get them taken at any professional photographer (or one who's not professional for that matter)

why dont you get your yellow book and call a photographer... and ask them what you need to do and stuff to prepare for a headshot

then tell em you'll call back (;)

Shave your head, kneel on your needs, put your arms behind your back and tell your friend who is behind you to pull the trigger.

Is this place full of retards?

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT FOR ACTING? IF SO FIND A REALLY GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER THEN GO WITH LIKE A RELAXING OUTFIT NOT LIKE SWEATS BUT LIKE A DAY AT THE PARK... THEN GO WITH A MORE SERIOUS LOOK LIKE NOT A SUIT BUT LIKE A SERIOUS FACE!?! THAT IS WHAT I HAD TO DO AND OH YEA LOOK UP THE DIRECTOR AND SEND THE PICTURES TO HIS OFFICE THAT IS HOW YOU WILL GET THE QUICKEST RESPONSE! IF ANY MORE QUESTIONS GO TO eHOW.COM THEN AS THE QUESTION TYPE IN HEAD SHOTS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT! THAT IS WHAT I HAD TO DO AND IT WORKED GREAT!!!

Hmm... well they don't have to be professional. Of course scamming agents/casting agency will try to convince you that you do. You can go professional if you want, but they are usually very expensive.

Or you can do it yourself here is how:

All you have to do is go to a nice place with a good professional looking background for you (like a quiet kept up park). Sit somewhere that flatters what you look like. Like a sit on a swing or up on a bench arm rest. Have someone take your picture with a digital camera. When you get home upload the pictures on to your computer. Download the free software called 'Picasa'. Search it on google to download it, if you dont have it already. Then crop your image to the way you like it. Also make is black and white. Then save it on a memory card/travel drive. Take it somewhere to get developed. Like a walmart self station. Print out various copies.

It's good to find a professional photographer to take one, because it comes out feeling a lot more sophisticated, and a good shot may simply call attention to itself. They have the right equipment and understand a lot more about lighting and whatnot than others could. You could definitely find one online.
They're usually not totally serious and button-down-shirt. You can work with different clothes and different poses if you'd like, and get a shot that kind of expresses yourself. Headshots are all about giving the director a feel for what you're like physically, so make sure yours does just that.
