Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I want to be in SAG so bad and just when I thought that I was going to be in it.

Question:I know how to get into SAG...First you have to be n a SAG film. Which I thought I was. You see I'm going to be in this indie film that I thought was SAG and I was getting super excited about finally getting to join. But I found out my indie film is non union...I really need to find a film that I can audition for that is SAG... Any good audition search engine sites that you know of that contain SAG films listings?

Actually, joining the union too soon can make it difficult later for you. Being SAG will restrict you from doing anything but SAG-approved projects, for which there is lots of competition.

If you want to rack up some credits, you can do a number of independent and student flms first to build up a body of work and reel.

Then when the time is right, and you are ready to compete for those SAG roles, you can again try for membership.

Just the perspective of someone who's been there.

Yeah, relax, there is no hurry. You really need an agent to get into a SAG film and find more SAG work. So until you have a resume that catches one's attention, do non union work. For more info read my profile and write me at my aol address

I agree about not being in a hurry to join SAG. If you do it before you're ready, you'll find it extremely difficult to get work. Build you're resume and get experience doing lead roles in non-union films first. The only place you need to really worry about being SAG is LA.

Also, realize that not every SAG film can get you your SAG card. There are several different contract levels depending on budget and the ones on the lower scale are allowed to cast non-union actors, which means the N-U actor will not get a voucher or be required to join SAG in order to pariticipate in the film. If you look at the listings on Actors Access you will see many student films that are SAG, these are an example of these types of contracts. Being under SAG gives the director the flexibility to cast both union and non-union actors, which is better for them in terms of finding the right talent (at least in places like NY and LA, where there are many SAG actors).

If you do want to look for SAG listings, check out actorsaccess.com or sagindie.com. But realize, though these are SAG films, most of them are the smaller budget ones that fall under contracts described above, so they won't get you into SAG. The big budget films cast through agencies.
