What type of audition are you doing?
acting?
singing?
dance?
if acting, are you going to be given a script to recite from or are you allowed to recite anything you choose?

When preparing for a theatrical audition, understand the parts and types that the producing company is looking for. (Example: male, 20's -30's, black or caucasion)

If you are auditioning for a particular production, be sure to learn all that you can about the show. Better still if you can get you hands on the script and read it. Cold readings are a challenge for many actors.

When auditioning, if you are asked to offer a monologue, prepare a dramatic and comedic piece. If you have an idea of the play that you are auditioning for, try to center the period of your monologue around the period of the play or in the theme of the play. This might offer to the director a sense that his work with you in dialect might be less difficult.

Be daring in your monologue. Don't be afraid to take risks with character. That is what we actors do when it comes to characterization, taking it to the next level. Remember that the director or producer may see hundreds of actors vying for the same role as you. You could be the stand out that decides whether they will use you or not.

Dress comfortably, because if you should be asked to stick around, the director may ask you to read with other actors to determine chemistry between yourself and another talent. You might be asked to provide movement or some type of dance. This the case usually in musical auditions.

Speaking on musical auditions. Be able to sing. I say that in the most serious way, because the first musical that I produced and directed, talent auditioned who could not carry a tune. Not everyone takes the process seriously and time is valuable.

There is great book called "Audition" that I encourage you to read.

I wish you great success!
