Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What is a good Broadway song for a girl to sing?

Question:I'd prefer that it be closer to opera (or much more serious)...but nothing too difficult. I'm not a singer by trade, just a student. Please include the title.

From your question I get the impression that you are not looking for Broadway songs "closer to opera," rather you want more traditional shows (ex: not Rent or Wicked. More along the lines of Rogers and Hammerstein). There are plenty of great songs for a high school female. I'm going to take a guess that you are a mezzo-soprano. You say you aren't a soprano and I suspect that you would have figured out by now if you were a really low alto. FYI: A baritone is a guy's voice.

Hope that helps, let me know what you decide to do would you? Also if you need any more help just contact me. I love talking about this sort of thing.

It would really help if you could tell us your range. Can you go very high? Can you go very low? If you're not sure and you have a piano/keyboard, try to find your high and low notes.

Once you know your range, edit your question, and I'll edit my answer.

For now, I recommend anything by Rodger and Hammerstein. Fairly simple songs. Ignore people who recommend Wicked or Hairspray, those songs get old fast.

I'm partial to "All That Jazz". if it's done right it's a knock out. Of course it depends on the pitch of their voice. You wouldn't want to try a high pitch song like alto or soprano when you have a baratone voice. The same is true in reverse, it would sound really bad trying to sing a low pitch song if you normally sing alto.
Of course, "All That Jazz" is more of a showtune than an opera song.

check out songs from Les Miserables or The Phantom of the Opera or Miss Saigon (that one is not really operatic but it's really good.)
