Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Picking a musical for a middle school to high school musical theater group?

Question:I am part of a musical theater group that puts on productions for kids 5-8, 8-12, and 12 up. Our teen theater (12 and up) can't think of what production to do. please list some musicals that fall into these guide lines:

We have a limited amount of boys (girls do play guys, but less male roles would be easier)

Our school year productions generally have a small cast (14 to 20 kids)

They can be a bit risqué, but shouldn't involve excessive inappropriate material

Here are some plays we've done to give you an idea:
The Pajama Game
Into the Woods
The Secret Garden
Little Shop of Horrors
The Mikado
Guys and Dolls
Fiddler on the Roof
Big River
Once upon a Mattress

Thanks!

Here are a few suggestions having done theater growing up:
"The Music Man"
"Bye Bye Birdie"
"Oklahoma"
"The Sound of Music"
"You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"
"Annie"

Hope this helps!

I would suggest "The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree" (its a great show and it has around the same number of parts you are looking for!)
You should also try "Oz" its a classic! Maybe also "The sound of Music"

hope this helps :]

Well, my school's drama club has a small amount of kids and mostly girls too, and a really good one you should consider is "Annie, jr." It's basically the story of Annie, but it's easy for young kids, and really good to do. If not that, then "High School Musical" is also a good one to try. It's really fun to do, and it doesn't compare to the movie. Since a lot of people have seen the movie and it's really popular, your ticket sales might be through the roof!! There's only about 3 or 4 main guy parts that you need to have, but other than that, you can easily change them to girl parts. For instance, the Jack Scott part (radio announcer) could be changed to Jill Scott. Plus, most of the time it's either the main characters doing something, or one big chorus. Well, whatever you decide to do, good luck!!!

I would highly recommend "Honk!" It is licensed by MTI. I directed it at the high school where I teach. The kids loved it. It can be done with as few as 8 and as many as 35 - doubling parts or having every character played by a different actor. Wonderful show!!

peter pan, Annie, hairspray, lion king, beauty and the beast, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, chitty chitty bang bang, the sound of music, Mary Poppins, Oklahoma, the pirate queen, seussical, snow white and the seven dwarfs, singing in the rain, wicked, the wizard of oz, you're a good man charlie brown. some may need some tweaking to become more age appropriate but judging on some of the lengths of these musicals they'll need editing anyway to fit the time allotted
