Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What happens at school musical auditions? Should I try out?

Question:i haven't had experience with auditioning for a school musical, but im thinking about it.

What happens at an audition? do you have to do it infront of other kids? Do you pick a song to sing or is it assigned? Does it cost money? What should you try to do? Do you try for a specific part or do you just audition for any role?

thanks! im just looking to see what your experience has been.

It depends. Sometimes you have to sing in front of other students, sometimes the director is nice and allows you to audition privately. Check to see if there is a flier on the specific audition you will be attending that will give more info. In any case, you might want to prepare a song to sing (preferably one from a musical). If you don't know what to sing, just come ready to sing Amazing Grace, since that song tends to give a good idea of your vocal range. Do you want a specific part? Would you be willing to put in all the work that would be involved? If so, go for whatever part attracts you most. In any case, the director will choose what you ultimately get. Musicals are fun but very stressful. I got talked into doing them in high school and ended up having a lot of fun. Go for it!

at my school i was in a room with just 3 teachers watching
(band)
and the other people that where gunna try out were outside...
its not scary when you have some friends with you or a good voice...
i think you should go, after that you wont be afraid to sing in front of people.

go for it, good luck 2

stay inside. fear everything. panic periodically. you will inevitably fail so why try.

It depends on what school. At the audition, they should hand you a sheet that asks you to put the first 3 roles you want the most and past experience, role, and title of show you have had. You might have to do it in front of other kids, but remember that everyone is doing the same thing and just as nervous as you are. You do have to try for a specific part but maybe you can tell them you are up for any role. Again, depending on the school you either get to sing your own song; but it will probably be assigned. Just remember, if it is your first show, don't be embarrassed if you chicken out. My friend was so nervous that she just made a noise, said she can't do it, and went back in the line.

Hope that helps!

well every school is different. sometimes u do it in front of ppl but that shouldn't matter bc if u can't do it at the audition, you'll be afraid to do it on stage. just try bc u can't make it if u don't try :) usually u just auditiona dn they give yuo a part so just go for it!

well at my school, i did the play last year, we had to sign up in the order we went and then we got to pick a song to sing and there were two judges yes we had to sing in front of everyone who was trying out, but it wasn't that bad i just stared at the back wall and at my school my drama teacher lets everyone in whether they get ensemble or a role but you just try out in general and you could always quit and no one will make fun of you who tried out because they went through the same pressure you did and sometimes people get more scared then others but that's okay! :)

Every school music tryouts are different. At my tryouts we can go in a group or by ourselves. We also get a booklet containing about three songs that we can choose from and we have to sing one of them. We can either sing in a group or by ourselves and we must do a specific assigned dance form the show. And last but not least they let us write down the roles that we would be more comfortable with. I don't know if this is the way they are going to do it at your school but my guess is that it will be very close to what I just described. Anyway, even if the auditions may scare you you still might want to go out and try auditioning. I am not sure about you but auditioning and performing on stage is one of the greatest feelings I have ever known. Even if you mess up on stage you have friends to cover for you. Its a great experience and I love it with all my heart. My auditions for The Seussical are next week. So, to wrap things all up I think you should go and try it. Who knows? you may like it!
