as far as bringing emotion to your face, use a mirror and over exxagerate facial expressions to the point where they are just ridiculous, then gradually tone them down till they are more natural. but being big on stage is what its all about, you need to exxagerate facial expressions so you look just as big to the people in back of the theater as the front.

with becoming your character, this takes time for some people. with every play and novel you read, frequently stop and think about the emotions you would feel if you were in the characters situation, and what you would do when confronted with that situation. the old "put yourself in another persons shoes" deal. try and really feel those emotions, replace characters in the play or book with people in your own life if it helps. once you start making that emotional connection you will start to be able to think like that character.

and dont worry about "not being pretty" its not a prerequisite to being good at acting.

Study habitual things that you do as a person. Study yourself. Then, eliminate those from your character and bring in new habitualisms to your character.
