Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Is the ability to sing that important for an actor?

Question:The more skills you can bring to the table the more marketable you are. It's the same in any occupation. Also...there may be a time when your acting career isn't going so well and you cn always support yourself through your music. Also....being able to do both doesn't limit you when it comes to working on stage or on screen. The most profitable stage work is in musicals. These are the ones who last the longest.

No, Unless it is a sing part.

it depends on what kind of acting...you should be able to sing its a good skill to have as an actor but there are loop holes.

Not unless you wanna perform in musicals or make a CD....

It's mostly about being able to show a lot of emotion and express yourself through expression.....

Yes. Long gone are the times of just acting..Most plays (theaters) require singing too...but not all of them...

Only for musical theatre.

if you want to be in musicals

not unless you're a crappy actor... you just have to be able to captivate an audience... they can alter the music so that you don't have to carry a tune...

No, there are lots of actors/actresses that can't sing. There are several who can, but most cannot.

Unless you plan on appearing in musicals, then singing ability is not a requirement to be an actor.

well it depends i mean like musicals yes but normal acting it depends on what show or play as like the wedding singer he needed to sing to do that movie

Depends what tipe of acting

Musicals yes

Action Films - No

If you're going to be in musical theatre... sort of. Some directors prefer actors that can sing rather than singers that can act.

For instance, take Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd. Did he have a phenomenal voice? Not really. But he is enough of an actor to portray the music well, and he brought enough character to the music that even Stephen Sondheim commended him on his performance.

Also, Broadway singing, sometimes not always, is about volume and power and bringing character to a song... not necessarily being an American Idol.
