How to move to Los Angeles???

Question:I want to be an actor. I well get a degree in acting in a few years and when i do i want to move to Los Angeles. I want to know how to move their and can i work for a acting company their that will give me a company houses and a company car???

Years ago, like up until 1950, studios would put actors under contract, and provide them with a house & car, if they were worth it to the studio. That system no longer exists. most films are now made independently, and distributed by studios. Most working actors are members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Of the aproximately 120,000 film and television principal performers and background performers worldwide, only about 10% make more than $5000/year. About .05% are the famous actors who make millions. The vast majority (95%) of professional actors have other jobs to pay rent, and buy their own cars. Remember these are actors who are members of the Union. There are thousands of other actors in Los Angeles who are not SAG members, and who work as extras and perform in many of the various theaters and clubs around town. Many of these people have degrees in Theater Arts, or are in school now. It is a very competitive business, so be ready to support yourself in some other way until you get acting work.

Let's get real here. First of all your acting degree is no help in getting a job as an actor. It may help you be a good actor, but that's it. It is a better idea to get established as an actor somewhere other that LA and move there when you know the ropes and are known in the industry. You have to provide your own car and your own living accomodations until you reach a point where you can negociate it.

A friend of mine's been doing it for 20 years now, he lives in a one room converted garage behind a house he makes about $5,000 a year in current TV money but after 20 years he has like $20,000 in residuals from all his other TV and movie work coming in so he does OK.

He makes what you'd make at KMart working the warehouse.

That's a typical actor.
