In my opinion, the most legit sites around are backstage.com and actorsaccess.com Backstage is the online version of the print newspaper byt the same name (used to be called Dramalogue). It's been an industry standard for years. It's a paper for the industry that also has audition listings. The online auditions area is called Casting Search and you can search for free, but you won't be able to see all the info unless you subscribe. Do the search, see if there's anything much in your area and if it's worth it for you to subscribe. Also, if it's a theatre audition chances are you will be able to see the theatre's name (or other info) and that will lead you to find the rest on your own for free. Just go directly to the theatre's own site.

As for actorsaccess, this is an offshoot of another industry standard called Breakdown Services. That's the casting service used by every legit agent to find auditions for their clients. AA is a watered down version so basically you won't find the top drawer auditions, and there will be some ads mixed in but the site is legit and it is free to set up an account and look through the auditions plus there will be some student and indie films which as a newbie you may have a better shot at. What costs on this site is if you have to submit yourself for the audition electronically. If however you find there are a lot of auditions for you in your area, consider subscribing to Showfax. It's a sides service where if sides (script pages) are available for your audition they will make them available to you via fax or online so you don't have to drive all over town to get them. With gas prices what they are and submissions too, $68.00 per year is not bad. You would be able to submit electronically on one account all you want for the year that you have the subscription. Not a bad deal.

good luck,
