Position:Home>Theater & Acting> My parents don't support me in what I love to do! help!?

Question:I love to act. I want to make it big, but I know there's not a big chance of that happening. I watch television and I don't see the shows, but the acting, and I think of how I would do that differently. I think that if I could get an agent or audition for roles in movies of television, I'd have a big chance. But my parents don't support me in this. They're fine with me in the school drama club and community productions, but other than that, nothing. I know I'm good (I don't want to sound like an egomaniac) because I got on the All-State Cast in my first state one act competition. I want to accomplish my dreams, but how do I get the support of my parents first?

I know that it's hard when you don't have your parents' support. I didn't either. I'm sure your parents want you to be successful at whatever makes you happy. I know mine did. My mother always told me that acting is fine but there should always be something else to be good at. She knew the chances of being a big time actor were slim and so did I. I'm not sure how old you are but if you're approaching highschool or you are in highschool already then stick with the school plays and the drama club. It's a really good start for anyone who likes theater and acting. I wish I would have had that in school. When you go to college you can study acting there, but remember that you may want to have something else to study too. It's not that you can't get a good job with a theater degree. You certainly can but like my mother said, it's good to have something else to be good at.
Sit your parents down and tell them that you want to pursue acting professionally. It is possible to do that and still maintain a normal life with school and other activities. Tell them that you want to look into taking some acting classes if there are any offered in your area. If there is a college in your town check there. If not call the chamber of commerce in your town and find out if there is a community theater. Find out about auditions and go for it. Once you get some shows done then you can start building your resume. If you've done some high school shows you can put those on there too.
Tell your parents that this is something that you really care about and you'd like their support. Believe me, there are far worse things out there to be involved in! Theater is a good way to learn teamwork, make friends, learn leadership skills, develop your intellectual mind, and entertain your community. I've learned that by doing community and college theater I became a respected member of my community and someone others can look up to. I am currently developing a theater program on my reservation here in Wyoming and I'm trying to convey this message to a bunch of people who have never done theater before. I wish you the best. Keep plugging away. Your parents will come around eventually. Just keep doing what you love.

make it big.
My mother wanted to be a model and her dad made fun of her and said she would never make it but after working really hard at it she started modeling and was making more money the her my grandpa was.

Do what makes you happy because if you aren't happy then your life won't be every thing it could be
