Question Home

Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Need Input on audition songs.?

Question:I'm auditioning for the any of the four sisters Little Women. I'm a soprano, 14 years old. I've picked four audition songs but am not sure which one to sing.
1. Better- Little Women(we are allowed to sing songs from the musical itself.
2. It Might As Well Be Spring-State Fair
3.I Got the Sun In the Morning- Annie Get Your Gun
4.Home-Beauty and the Beast
:) I know, odd song choices.

Also, I desperately need a one-minute monologue. Thanks!!!

I highly suggest Home from beauty and the beast. It is a very powerful song and will leave a lasting impression with the casting director. It shows off the singer's vocals and also shows alot of character. Both of these give the actor/actress a better chance. Being an actress myself I know these things
For monologues I suggest buying "monologues for young actors". It is a great source and I trust the book myselft. I suggest the Anne Frank monologue, it is really deep and gives the proper amount of character. The first paragraph is exactly a minute long so it would be perfect. Good luck on the audition!

I guess because they said its fine to sing songs from the show, youre more likely to get other girls singing the same and them getting a little tired of the repetition.

I got the sun in the morning is a catchy tune so would stick in their heads after but isnt amazing for showing off your vocal range. If you are nervous at all or a not too experienced though its totally fine to stick to easier songs as the way you carry them will shine through and all they need to know is that you can hold a tune - often theyll have pros to train you up specifically for the role.

Im not familiar with the other two songs Im afraid so cant really help you come to a final descision - Id say just go with what you feel most comfortable and confident singing - but think about what theyll be looking for too - acting ability can come through in singing too!

Because youre soprano - if only for future - you may also like "Stop and See Me" - a lovely little known song from the musical 'A Weird Romance.' Theres a couple of good solos in 'I Love you Youre Perfect Now Change' - a musical about contemporary relationships. 'Here on Earth' from 'The Brain from Planet X' is a nice sweet easy tune a bit like 'Someplace thats Green.' Oh and 'The Last 5 Years' - though youll probably already know that one - I just love the score - and its great for solos cos thats all its made up of!

The 1 minute monologue is a little harder - its hard to get good ones for girls! Id say maybe something from 'After the End,' 'Breathing Corpses,' 'Crooked' or "When You Cure Me' if youre looking for a contemporary character piece. If you want to make it completely your own, Martin Crimp's 'Attempts on her life' is great because its completely diverse adaptable and unfixed - no set characters but very multistranded - would show off both your creative and acting abilities. Because its for Little Women you may want to look for something more period or about girls or women realizing themselves (working on the same themes) - I dont know quite what to recommend here - if you want to go really old-school theres Ibsens 'A DollHouse' or I heard about a play called 'Uncommon Women and Others' - about a variety of female characters - may be a monologue or two there. If you want to be risque - Vagina Monologues!!

Sorry I couldnt be more help - hope it was some use to you! Good luck! :)
