Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Should I be in my High Schools All School Musical?

Question:I am a senior. I was in the Chorus my freshman year, Starred as Curley in Oklahoma my soph. Year(i did a great job but im thought of more as a funny guy nowadays), and Last Year was cast as Big Julie in Guy's and Dolls. Now, our school is putting on "Thoroughly Modern Millie." I was cast as Ching-Ho, and was kind of disappointed as I wanted the role of Trevor Greydon. Now Im questioning doing it because I dont really like this part and I dont think its worth it.

The downs: I have blond hair and blue eyes (dont look the part)
-This is a very tough role and all of my lines are in Mandarine (and I dont even like my part)
-Im a lacrosse player and the play always interferes, (Im going to college to play lacrosse though)
-I dont have that many friends in the show anymore, but many outside the show
-I dont feel like ill enjoy it

Ups:I'll be really good and funny
-wouldnt have to work during the spring
-enjoy the last show ill probably ever do
-wouldnt be ridiculed by people

If you think that you are going to have a bad attitude the whole time you are doing the show, then save yourself (and the other cast members) the trouble and drop out. The Chinese guys are VERY funny in the show. You were cast because they thought you'd do a great job. It would be a great challenge. But if you don't think you'll be happy, then turn down the role.

I see....

Well, as a theater maniac at my high school I absolutely insist on you doing this show. Thoroughly Modern Millie is hillarious(as I'm sure you know) and so much can be done with Ching-Ho. Screw the fact you aren't asian...all the more reason to prove you can play anything you set your mind to. Plus, it's your senior year (and boo-hoo you didn't get Trevor, it happens to every theater person, no matter how good they are...lol) and I can picture it now. You'll be looking back in your high school year book and every year except your SENIOR year you'll have been involved with your school's theater program-something, as you said, you probably will never do again.

and of course, I can't forget to mention. colleges will love to see you're a well rounded student. A student able to balance lacrosse and a show...it looks good on applications.

so do it!!!

:D

just so you know, if you turn down the part because it isn't g enough or the lead role, that attitude sucks. I help to manage an annual summer musical for high school students and if someone turns down a role because it isn't the part that they wanted, we dint even consider casting them the next year and your directors will probably feel the same. It's a really bad attitude you have. If your goal in life is to be the star and be center of attention, then you have picked the wrong field for you and should probably stick to lacrosse.
