It boils down to the difference (yet again) between American english and the Queen's english. Here in Canada, we also spell it Theatre. And TheatRE school will have degrees in theatRE. TheatER is rarely used in post-secondary, instead they refer to it as Film.

There's a saying here too, if you spell it with an "er", you're in the wrong profession. lol.

Also, a REproduction is generally refered to as a remount. And a reproduction only counts if the show is done as it was done originally, same costume, same set, possibly the same performers, etc. In other words a direct artistic copy of the original.

A production is the general term for any theatrical show being performed. So, if you are producing "To Kill a Mockingbird" and have seperate rights, different cast, different design and an overall different artistic version, it is simply called a production.

Hope that helps!

this is just my guess but

re is usually reserved for a stage show while er is a movie theater

as for the show its self it'd be the school's productions of to kill a mockingbird or technically a revival (sorta)

Theatre is the study, while theater is the place. Like I am a Theatre Major at the School of Theatre. I like to go to see movies in a nice theater.

It would also be your school's production of the play. It would be a reproduction if it was an attempt to make the play exactly the same, like with the same sets, make-up, hair and such.

Theatre is also the British spelling of the word.

The answer is there is no real correct answer, yes, theatre is the British spelling, but American (I am assuming you're American) theater is so heavily influenced by English theatre i.e. Shakespeare that it has become commonplace for the ...re spelling to be used in the business. (There may also be an element of "theatre snobbishness" in this) In terms of common practice Arrie T is right, Theatre generally refers to the study or the institution, and Theater refers to the venue. But these are completely interchangeable so the choice is really your own. I would say Theatre, but Theater will make the spell check proud. As for production or reproduction it is allways a production.
