Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Acting: How To Act, Acting Advice ALL answers Welcome PLEASE! Spread your knowle

Question:There are many questions about acting, but i would like some more answer and more knowledge, please!! There are many actors here i am sure, so i was wondering if YOU can offer some advice and some tips on acting? ANY AT ALL ( e.g How you cry, use your voice in scenes, how to portray sad emotions ect..)
What are good exercises to get into character, warm-up?
Using facial expression and especially body movements and hand gestures ( i try to use my body, but sometimes i dont know what to do, my hands might also look out of place at times)

ONE question i ALWAYS wanted to know about is...
when actors are shouting and crying at the same time, how is their face not over exadurated and all over the place. Also what do they do with their hands, how do they stand, do they lean forward ect..... Try to do this is the mirror and tell me what you did!! :)

-Also how do you give a 'heart wrenchign performance'!?

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE

ALL ADVICE AND ALL TIPS are appriciated!! :):):)

Well I don't know much about acting, but I think I can help with some things. For crying, some people use the think-of-something-really-sad-to-bring -you-to-tears approach, but that doesn't always work. So, rather than thinking of dead puppies, try thinking of how you feel when you are crying, how you don't want to cry but you know you will anyway. Or, if deadpuppies works for you, I recommend watching a sad movie every now and then like Titanic, or A Walk to Remember. This way, you have something ready to think about when you need a few faux-tears. As for keeping yourselve composed while crying, I have no tips except to practice this as much as possible. Over time it will become easier to turn the tears on and off, which is useful when you don't want to be a mess onstage/ in front of the camera.

For warmups, try getting into character a little while before performing, or just act like your character on normal days. This way you will be more comfortable when you need to be someone else.

I have the same awkward body problem, but people I've talked to say that even if you feel awkward, it may not look that way, so keep doing anything you can without stopping altogether.

I also struggle with vocal inflection/volume when showing emotion. Take a look at everyone you know, meet, or see. Pay attention to how they hold themselves and how they sound when they're angry/sad/excited and how they look, act or behave in different situations. This may help.

Use this for a 'heart wrenching performance'. Connect with viewers/the audience by showing the same habits as a normal person. This helps them relate to you [the actor/character] and will also make them understand how you feel. If you cry, they cry. If you're mad they're mad. Get it?

Hope I helped!!

Acting is easy. All you have to do is pretend to be somebody else. And mean it.

From a kid I like to watch movies over and over until I have memorized them so I can act it out with my other siblings and friends, that's how I became a good actor.

Well I think you need to close your eyes and think about yourself in your characters position and then feel all the emotion and possiblities in that atmosphere. Then open your eyes and potrait the lines and feelings as appropriately as possible.
Hope that helps :)

Aha well i see you really want to learn the ropes without paying for the workshops ;)
But im suggesting that you still go to some camps, they'll teach you everything you need to know.

But for some answers to your questions. The one you always watned to know about. Well i've had to do this sort of scene for a movie. It was pretty hard, like you said to control your expressions. the main part for me was trying to think about something sad to make myself cry ASWELL as talking about something that wasn't making me sad. Aha very difficult.

So what i did, was i practiced it over and over. Thats what rehersals are for! Trying not to move in one round, then jumping up and down in another. Trying to find out what my character would have done. Then you string it all together. and then do the scene, but every couple of seconds do like a quick check to make sure you're not getting a face lift ;)

An awsome excersise that i love doing is to turn the closed caption on, on your tv. The put a little mirror with a stand on top of your tv. Then pick a character that you are firmiliar with and absorb what they are feeling. Then when the other people are talking to you, you quickly catch what they're going to say. Look up at your reflection and thats the character you're now talking to.

It gives you a chance to see what you're doing, to fix it, and to calm down and try to do what you think the character would do.

Well i think thats enough information for now :P
Soo good luck in the acting world!

You're trying to act instead of acting.

Acting is reacting and optionally building a character (method work).

Let's say you're on a set with a mirror. If you're a girl and you walk by that mirror you HAVE to look into it and maybe fuss with your hair, while you're doing the lines.

This is being normal.

NO girl goes past a mirror without at least glancing into it.

That's reacting to the environment.

That's called a bit of business

Now when you build a character that character might make a bee line for that mirror and take out the tools of the trade and do a remake on the spot.

OR, treat the mirror as Dracula would, grimace and turn from it.

Of course if the director don't like it you gotta do what the director wants

An actor who uses method needs to be aware and you start by looking at yourself and see what you naturally do with your hands

Then you take a friend and see if you can find their tells and must mimic two or three of them.

A lot depends on your character's place in the plot. If you're one of the top 3 then you have latitutde and can decide if the character is a hand person or not.

If you do it, you always have to do it.

If you look at George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove he's always doing something intentful with his hands.

When he's nervious he's taking 5 minutes to unwrap a stick of gum.

When he's in fearful awe of the President he has them in his lap.

When he's talking he makes wild gestures, puts up 1 finger, two fingers, three fingers as he makes his point, shuffles books around, slams his hand on the table, slaps his belly, puts his arms out to mimmic wings of a plane.

He's very animated and augments his speech with arm and hand gesutures.

The character of Boris in Golden Eye always has a pen in his hand and he twrils it and clicks it.

Men often scratch their chins and cheeks because of their beards. You can feel it by the end of the day and it sort of itches.

People with glass push them up.
