Question Home

Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I need a song for an alto/messo that I can use for competition...?

Question:Theres some rules I have to follow:
-Its needs to be from a musical
-It needs to be able to be performed for a high school audience (nothing "bad")
-Nothing over used

I have a few songs in mind, but some of them don't follow the rules. They're just here to give you an example of what I'm looking for:

-"Life of the Party" and "Look at Me Now" from Wild Party (I LOVE how I can belt those and they're fun songs!)
-"Home" from Beauty and the Beast
-"High Times, Hard Times" from Newsies
-"Stranger to the Rain" from Children of Eden
-"Times Like These" from Lucky Stiff
-"Still Hurting" from The Last Five Years

I love the songs from Wild Party and Newsies because they are up-beat, fun, loud, outgoing....and not a ballad. ;) I really want something like those, but Newsies is just a movie and Wild Party is not suitable for high school audience. Please let me know what you think! Thank you soooo much!

Hi. I can suggest some songs that are great for mezzo-sopranos:

I Dreamed A Dream from Les miZ - not too high, just perfect range for an mezzo-soprano and alto.
Someone Like You from Jekyll & Hyde - nice ballad
With One Look from Sunset Blvd.
I Enjoy Being A Girl - fun song, medium range, upbeat
Nothing from A Chorus Line - fun and upbeat
Fallin' - from They're Playing Our Song
I'm Not That Girl from Wicked - specially great for altos. The lowest is lower E (lower Mi).
The Wizard and I from Wicked - highest note is higher E
Don't Rain On My Parade from Funny Girl
Someone Else's Story from Chess
You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel
Unexpected Song from Song & Dance/Tell Me On A Sunday

I am a lyric Mezzo soprano, and here are some songs that I love to sing:

"When I Look at You" from The Scarlet Pimpernel
"Home" from Beauty and the Beast
"Adalaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls
"Stars and Moon" from Songs for a New World
"How Could I Ever Know" from The Secret Garden
"Hold On" from The Secret Garden
"The Simple Joys of Maidenhood" from Camelot
"So in Love" from Kiss Me Kate
"Many a New Day" from Oklahoma!
"Anyone Can Whistle" from Anyone Can Whistle

That's all I can think of at the moment. I hope this helps. Pick something that shows off your voice and would be entertaining to the audience.

so this is an amazing song.

Someone Like You- Jekyll & Hyde
