Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Tips on becoming an actor?

Question:I've been taking acting classes and have been in 8 musical performances for the past 3 years. I'm 16 years of age, and wish to fulfill my dream of acting through indie films... not so much mainstream. Also, I live in Tucson, Arizona. Not much happens here. Any help or tips?

Mandy.com: Act for free. Build up a network of social contacts.

A talented actor will get notice and practice can help you develop those talents. Remember that when Johnny Depp got his lucky break in the movie Nightmare on Elm Street, his performance was very wooden, stale, but now he has become a fine class actor through regular practice and appearing routinely in movies.

Be a constant observer of humanity - real life people are the best actors, study them closely. This is what makes Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman such fine actors. Both are very observant of people. Be imaginative in your performances - a actor is an artist and like all artists, need to be creative, bringing originality to their performances and making the dialogue on the page spring to life. Many young actors are very wooden, like how Johnny Depp use to be. By overcoming this, you will have an edge over the rest of your competitors. It is no coincidence that many fine actors come from the best colleges - e.g. Harvard, Yale, Princeton. They are very literate, educated in pyschology, english literature, film etc. You need to follow their example. Also know thyself, your strengths and limitations. Often casting directors will choose an archetypefor roles - the person that fits the part, usually appearance wise. This is especially true when you are at the bottom of the ladder. Al Pacino was a fresh face actor when he was chosen to star in The Godfather because of how he looked the part - a cold but highly intelligent Sicillian. Try and apply for the parts that best suit you, not necessarily the roles that you want to play.

When you are old enough to leave your home you can move to Los Angelos or even Boston where more opportunities exist.

Don't.
