I am, because I feel obligated to. I feel like it's too many of my favorite things in one place, though.

It's one of my favorite musicals by one of my favorite composers (Sondheim), directed by my favorite film director (Tim Burton), and starring one of my favorite film actors (Johnny Depp). I think it's all going to cancel out.

I love the stage version, and have an awful feeling I'm going to be disappointed by the film. Johnny Depp is an incredible actor, to be sure, but from what I've seen of the previews he doesn't have a strong enough voice to carry the role of Sweeney. We'll see. I think they cut a lot of the songs, too, and added dialogue. Whatever, I'm still going to see it and whine about all the unnecessary changes they made.

Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I just saw the Broadway Across America production here and was, as always, impressed with dept of Sonheim's writing.... having said that Johnny Depp is always his best at this kind of tormented soul, meets black humor, meets wayward lover... Helena Bonham Carter is AMAZING in pretty much every thing she does and well it should be an interesting visual even if they get everything else wrong in translation...

I'm going to see Sweeney Todd in Cincinnati in February. As much as Johnny Depp can act, he can't sing. At all. Horribly nasally. Helena Bonham Carter is very "breathy", Anthony looks like a woman and can't sing that well, Johanna has an Irish accent, though she can sing pretty well, and Toby is apparently 10. So, I'll probably not be seeing the movie, at least I won't see it in theatres. Maybe I'll rent it, I don't know. x]
