And YES I did read the play, I just don't know the answer to this. Thanks! Horatio is Hamlet's ONLY true friend. He acts of a sort of conscience. He is the only character Hamlet can trust. (This really is the reader's digest answer); whereas Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are merely classmates. Hamlet never trusts them. Horatio is also a scholar--a man of equal wit and intelligence to Hamlet. R & G are akin to the sycophants of the classical greek philosophers. R & G can also be seen as kind of clown characters. There is a great deal of comedy in this play. That's just a start. One could write pages on that question. |
