Position:Home>Theater & Acting> New Yorkers: What is your advisory for good Broadyway shows that are playing rig

Question:I lived in New York City years ago & very much enjoyed going to as many Broadway plays I could take in or afford. I also danced on Off-Broadway although it was not my main avocation in life, but had a high appreciation for musical theatre and went on to produce a number of award winning shows in other markets.

I watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this past month where there were numerous performances of key scenes and songs from some of the popular Broadway shows playing right now. That was helpful. And I am aware of a few of the major ones out there but am curious as to some of the ones you might recommend. They don't have to be totally mainstream. I thought it fun to go to some of the lesser shows that maybe the throngs of tourists hadn't caught on to just yet.

What are the trends on Broadway right now? How is the health of the NYC theatre performance market? I finance media & entertainment although not directly involved in Broadway. Looking for industry update.

I hear "Xanadu" is hysterical, but only if you have seen the movie. Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa are in it though, which means it has to be pretty good.
The mainstream stuff is all pretty solid, i.e. "Wicked" "Rent" "Spring Awakening" "Hairspray", etc.
I saw Cyrano de Bergerac two nights ago, and I wouldn't really recommend it.
I haven't seen "Young Frankenstein" but it's getting raves.
Off-Broadway "WalMartopia" is good, "Altar Boyz" is good, "Forbidden Broadway" (as always) is good.
Right now it seems like the trend is going towards more and more rock musicals.
