I know that towards the end of Renaissance Commedia Dell'arte was really popular. That was improvisational though. If you go to wikipedia you can find a lot of information. That's what I used for my history of theatre paper.

Google the terms "Italian Renaissance Playwrights" and you should be deluged with a plethora of information...and...when you look it up yourself...you remember more of what you learned than having someone do it for you...
