The actor is required, contractually (by the agreement signed between Disney and the Producer), to embody the character as written in the script. General clauses of this nature usually reads that the theatre will not modify the gender, dialogue, or characterisation of any characters in the script.

A good actor will always bring new ideas and concepts into the rehearsal hall. That is why an actor is hired - Theatre is a very collaborative art. Just simply remember that the playwright(s) WROTE the script, so it is THEIR story, you are just retelling it with respect to the original text.
