I want to act, but I cant sing. How else can I get experience?

Question:There is not a community theatre around, and I can't sing so I can't do a musical at my school. I go to a theatre camp, but that's the only way I can think of to get on stage experience. Anyone have ideas?

You can still do the musical at your school, you would just be in the ensemble (unless you director will only take those who sing well even for the ensemble).

Where do you live? Theatres are everywhere you just have to look for them. Get a couple of local papers and check out the calendar section or where live theatre is listed. See what theatres are within a reasonable driving distance from your home. Most theatres do musicals so you need voice lessons to help you in that area. It wouldn't hurt to try to get into your church choir or anything that will get you singing on a regular basis. The more you sing the better you will get.

Theatre camp is great, but I imagine that's only for a very limited time during the summer. What about acting classes at a theatre or acting studio in your area? Stear clear of John Robert Powers and other similar companies who charge enormous fees and promise the world but don't deliver much in return.

Also, you could check out backstage.com - casting search & actorsaccess.com to see if there are other types of auditions in your area. These are not completely free, but you can check them out for free to see if it's worth it to pay anything. Besides theatre, you can look for student films, indie films, possibly some tv, etc. If those sites have anything in your area a subscription may be worth it. If not, then don't waste your money. Those sites have much more for people in areas where the majority of filming already takes place (Los Angeles, New York, etc.) but they do have things in many other areas, just not nearly as much.

From there they could recommend a singing coach if you want to go that route... does your schoo have chorus? Try out for the musical anyway. Even if you get a small part anything helps.

Also you could call any of the acting studios and they could suggest something!

Ask if there is a non-singing role in the musical. At my old school one year there was a musical (and I can't sing) but I got a non-singing role! It was sweet lol!
