be clever and unique. Pull the rug out somewhere near the end or past the middle.

You want the producer, director and audience to realize this is not the movie they thought it was, which totally disorients them and makes them want to NOW find out what is really going on. That way they stay til the end.

You want to keep it shootable (imagine you have to do this yourself with friends on a budget, in fact do it with friends and a camcorder just to see what can and can't be done).

Keep it around 100 pages.

1) Low budget
2) Learn about story structure - 3 acts, emotional rollercoaster, empathy, etc. Watch good films for inspiration (E.T, Schlinders List, Godfather)

3) 3d characters - observe real people closely in a variety of different environments; they are great sources of information and by picking up on this it will give your screenplay an edge that most lack. Characters with weaknesses, insecurities are more interesting than one dimensional heroes. e.g Captain Jack Sparrow

4) Write about what you know!!!
5) Experience life - become a sponge. Oliver Stone is a good writer because he has a lot of worldly experience; a former Vietnam veteran, a Harvard university graduate; a former drug addict; a son of a Wall Street broker
6) Take your time - do research
7) Read and read and read; write, write and write
