It was unthinkable for a Victorian era wife and mother to desert her family, no matter how abused she may be. This play ends with 'the door slam heard around world.' It was the begining of modern feminism. It is said such a fury arose over the ending that Ibsen wrote one where she did not leave, but others say that his response to such complaints was Ghosts in which the sins of the father are visited upon the son. You might do research to see if there was a movie of the play, it could have had an alterenated ending.
