Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What do you do at a melodrama audition?

Question:There's a technical definition of melodrama -- a a drama with music -- but these days it usually means an story with exaggerated characters. In fact, they're so exaggerated, that even though a drama, they're comic. The good guys are REALLY good; the bad guys are REALLY bad and they're fighting over a beautiful, innocent girl. The music is often organ music. The hero says something, and the organ plays a bright chord. The villain says something, and the organ plays a dark chord, etc.

I'm not an actor, but if I were going to audition for a melodrama, I'd do a piece where the character is exaggerated, not subtle. Since you're a young woman, I'd look for a "damsel in distress" scene, and play with big gestures and big emotions.
