Actors Studio?

The method and its teachers are passe`. The method was based on a misinterpretation of Stanislavski. All ways of teaching acting based on Stansilavski (misinterpreted or not) are passe` because they teach acting and that is not what today's effective actors do. It is just that the teachers of these ways of acting were like cult leaders and have established a rabid following who are stuck back in the 1950's.

It is easy if are your pretty. Just kidding. You are on the right track but don't put all your eggs in one basket. In New York and LA their dozens of good teachers of the Method. You need to find someone in your area with New York Method connections to write a letter a recommendation. Don't try to teach yourself the Method you can go crazy or become unteachable. But do read the history of the Group Theater and all those Russians.

I would suggest you learn how to talk and move Tai Chi and dance are good starts.Do a lot of local plays. The Neighborhood playhouse has a two year program, Uta Hagen school is still around. Micheal Chekhov followers are active. I studied for three years under David Mamet and Bill Macy. Mamet's Atlantic school is still kicking, I suggest you save your money and calculate how much it will cost to live in New York or L.A. for a year then add thirty per cent. Sell stocks and commodities over the phone is good way to make money if you have developed a charming voice. Stay away from colleges unless you want learn lighting and set design or their is a good Method teacher in continuing education.

It is difficult to get into, but there are other schools and many many many other actors making a living at their craft who did not go to the Actors' Studio and who do not practice "The Method." Method acting is only one of numerous "tools" an actor should have in his "toolbox" that he can use when the ocassion calls for it.

Whether or not it is a "good" school is all a matter of opinion. It is one training method, however, it is one specific style. Yes, it is difficult to get in to, however, I reccomend looking into a theatre degree from a well known theatre program at a university. You will get a more rounded education, teaching you more than one style and type of theatre (ie, not just "method", but also Chekhov, commedia, mask work, elements, etc).
